Understanding the UK Immigration Cycle

UK immigration policy moves in a predictable cycle. Understanding it helps you separate real changes from social media panic and plan your timeline strategically.

The UK needs immigrants as much as immigrants need the UK. Commonwealth ties remain a strong factor in policy decisions.

Academic & Language Requirements

For Undergraduate

• Academic: Minimum 40–45% in Intermediate (FSc/FA/ICS/ICOM) OR Grade B and C in O Levels and A Levels. Requirements vary between universities — always verify with the specific institution.
• Age: Preferred 18–25. Gaps of 3–4 years accepted with justification. Fill CV gaps with relevant experience.
• Conditional offers are standard: Most universities issue conditional offers pending final grades or IELTS results. You do not need everything finalised before applying.

For Postgraduate

• Academic: Minimum CGPA 2.00 (on a 4.0 scale). Specific courses may require higher. Use grade conversion tools where needed.
• Age: No upper age limit. Justification may be required for longer gaps.
• Conditional offers: Also standard at postgraduate level — apply with provisional transcripts and pending IELTS.

English Language Requirements

• Undergraduate: IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall. No individual band below 5.5. Some departments may require higher.

Application Process

Undergraduate (UCAS)

All undergraduate applications go through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). A single UCAS application lets you apply to up to 5 universities/courses for a fee of £28.95 (~PKR 10,400).

Postgraduate (Direct Application)

Postgraduate applications are submitted through each university's own online portal. There is no centralised system like UCAS for Master's. Apply to 4–6 universities across different competitiveness tiers.

Required documents for all applications

Intake timeline — September (Main)

January (Spring) intake: Apply by October of the previous year. Far fewer programmes available — verify with the specific university before planning around it. April–May intake: Very limited courses only.

Student Visa Process

Pakistani citizens apply for a Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal. The process is online, followed by a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in Pakistan.

Step 1: Receive your CAS

After accepting your offer and paying the tuition deposit (£2,000–5,000 / ~PKR 7.1–17.8 Lac), the university issues your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) — a unique 14-character electronic reference number linked to the UKVI database. It contains your personal details, course information, fees paid, and English proficiency proof. Valid for 6 months, usable only once.

Step 2: Prepare financial evidence (28-day rule)

You must prove you have enough money maintained for 28 consecutive days before applying. The funds must not fall below the required amount during this period. Bank statements must be dated within 31 days of your visa application.

Whose bank account? Funds can be in your name or your parent's name. If using parent's account, you need: bank statements + consent letter + birth certificate (all attested). The bank statement must show the full 28-day period with the balance never dropping below the required amount.

Step 3: Submit online visa application

Apply at gov.uk/student-visa. Fill all sections: personal info, immigration history, course details (using CAS number), financial support, and English language. Pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) online.

Step 4: Biometrics appointment at VFS Global

Book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre via VFS Global. Centres are available in Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Hyderabad, Multan, Mirpur, Sialkot, and Sukkur. At the appointment: provide fingerprints, photograph, and signature (10–15 minutes). Submit your passport (may be held during processing).

Work Rights

International students on a Student Visa can work, but there are important restrictions.

What you CANNOT do on a Student Visa:

• Be self-employed or work as a freelancer
• Work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach
• Fill a permanent full-time vacancy

Hourly rate: The National Living Wage (NLW) for workers aged 21+ is £12.71/hr (~PKR 4,540/hr) from April 2026. At this rate:

• 20 hrs/week during term: ~£254/week (~PKR 90,700) — covers part of living expenses
• Full-time during holidays: ~£508/week (~PKR 1.8 Lac) — significant earnings during breaks

Post-Study Work: The Graduate Route

After graduating, you can apply for the Graduate Route visa, which gives you open work rights with no employer sponsorship required.

Key rules for the Graduate Route

• Duration: 2 years for Bachelor's and Master's graduates who apply on or before 31 December 2026. 3 years for PhD graduates (unchanged). From 1 January 2027, non-PhD graduates applying will receive 18 months instead of 2 years.
• Application deadline: Apply before your Student Visa expires. Missing this deadline means losing eligibility entirely.
• Open work rights: Work for any employer, in any role, including self-employment. Switch employers freely. No salary threshold.
• Fee: £937 (~PKR 3.3 Lac) from April 2026. Plus IHS at £1,035/year (not the student rate of £776).
• No financial proof required: You do not need to show funds for the Graduate Route application.

The Settlement Pathway: From Student to ILR

After your Graduate Route, you must transition to a Skilled Worker visa to begin the settlement clock. There are two pathways to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR):

Pathway A: 5-year Skilled Worker Route (most common)

Pathway B: 10-year Long Residence Route

An alternative pathway where ALL legal residence counts — including student years and Graduate Route time. After 10 years of continuous legal residence, you can apply for ILR regardless of visa type. This is useful if you struggle to secure Skilled Worker sponsorship early.

Scholarships

• Chevening Scholarships: Fully funded Master's covering tuition, living costs, flights, and visa. Highly competitive — requires 2 years of work experience and strong leadership profile. Apply via chevening.org.
• Commonwealth Scholarships: Full funding for Master's and PhD for students from Commonwealth countries. Apply through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.
• GREAT Scholarships: £10,000 (~PKR 3.6 Lac) toward tuition for one-year Master's. Available at participating universities for Pakistani students.

Dependents (Family Reunification)

Dependents are only permitted if you are enrolled in a postgraduate programme at a Higher Education Provider, or are a government-sponsored student. Undergraduate students cannot bring dependents.

• Who can join: Spouse/civil partner (both must be 18+) and unmarried children under 18.
• Timing: Dependents can apply at the same time as you or after you have arrived and registered at university.
• Financial requirement: You must show £845/month (~PKR 3 Lac) per dependent (London) or £680/month (~PKR 2.4 Lac) per dependent (outside London) in bank statements for 28 consecutive days.
• Work rights: Dependents of postgraduate students can work full-time with no restrictions.
