South Korea offers world-class education at an affordable cost, with a clear pathway from student visa to permanent residency. Strong in technology, engineering, and business, Korean universities actively recruit international graduates into their workforce. The K-STAR fast-track makes it one of the fastest routes to PR for STEM students anywhere in Asia.

Why South Korea?

With 43 universities in the QS World Rankings, South Korea has established itself as a top study destination in Asia. The country invests nearly 5% of its GDP in education and research, producing globally competitive graduates in technology, engineering, and the sciences.

Unlike Western destinations with six-figure tuition bills, Korean degrees come at a fraction of the cost. The government actively supports international students through the GKS scholarship programme, and the recently introduced K-STAR fast-track allows STEM graduates to obtain permanent residency in as little as 3 years — one of the fastest pathways in the world.

⚡ What makes South Korea stand out

Key advantages for Pakistani students

No blocked account — only a bank statement is required; your money stays accessible. Affordable tuition compared to US, UK, or Australia. 25–30 hours/week work rights during semester with Korean language proficiency. K-STAR fast-track for STEM graduates — PR in 3 years. Strong tech and manufacturing economy that actively hires international graduates. Government scholarship programme (GKS) with full funding. Two intakes per year — March and September.

⚠ Important: 20 universities barred from student visas

Always verify IEQAS certification

In February 2026, the Korean government barred 20 universities from issuing D-2 student visas for failing to manage international students properly. Before applying, verify your university's IEQAS (International Education Quality Assurance System) status on the Study in Korea portal. Only IEQAS-certified universities can issue the Standard Admission Letter needed for your visa.

Academic & Language Requirements

For Undergraduate:

  • Academic: 60–70% in Grade 12 / FSc / A-Levels. Top universities (SNU, Yonsei, KAIST) require 75%+.
  • IELTS: 5.5–6.5 overall, varying by university. Some accept MOI letters — verify first.
  • Most UG programmes are in Korean. English-taught UG options are limited — mainly at Yonsei, Korea University, and SNU.
  • Age: 18+ minimum. No upper age limit.

For Postgraduate:

  • Academic: 4-year Bachelor's degree with 2.5+ CGPA. Competitive programmes require 3.0+.
  • IELTS: 5.5–6.5 overall. Check specific programme requirements.
  • Relevance matters: Your Bachelor's major should match your target Master's. Cross-disciplinary applications need strong justification.
  • More English-taught options at Master's level, especially in business, engineering, and computer science.
⚠ Korean language is essential

Even for English-taught programmes

TOPIK (Korean language test) determines your work hours: TOPIK 3+ = 25 hrs/week for undergraduates; TOPIK 4+ = 30 hrs/week for graduates. Without TOPIK, you are limited to 10–15 hrs/week. Korean proficiency is also critical for jobs after graduation and for the F-2-7 / F-5 PR pathway. Start learning Korean before you arrive.

Application Process

Each Korean university has its own online portal. There is no centralised application system. Apply to 4–6 universities across different competitiveness tiers.

1

Shortlist universities and verify IEQAS

Use the Study in Korea portal to search programmes and confirm IEQAS certification. Check language of instruction (English vs Korean) for each programme.

2

Get your documents attested

This must be done BEFORE your University Application and visa application. Matric/FSc: IBCC → MOFA. Bachelor's/Master's: HEC → MOFA. Some universities additionally require Korean Embassy attestation. Start this process early — it takes 4–8 weeks.

3

Apply through university portals

Submit applications directly on each university's website. Upload attested transcripts, IELTS/MOI, CV, SOP, recommendation letters, and pay the application fee (₩50K–100K / ~PKR 10K–20K per university).

4

Pay first semester tuition to receive CoA

If admitted, pay the first semester fee to get your Standard Admission Letter (CoA) — the document required for your visa application.

Intake timeline — September (Fall, Main)

When What to do
Feb–Mar Research programmes. Start IBCC/HEC/MOFA attestation (4–8 weeks). Begin IELTS prep.
Apr–May Submit applications. Prepare bank statement (₩20M). Get TB test.
May–Jun Receive admission letter. Pay 1st semester tuition. Get CoA from university.
Jun (latest) Submit D-2 visa in person at Korean Embassy Islamabad or Consulate Karachi.
Jun–Jul Visa processing (2–4 weeks). Book flight only after visa approval.
Aug–Sep Arrive in Korea. Register at university. Apply for ARC within 90 days.

March (Spring) intake: Smaller, fewer programmes. Apply Oct–Nov. Always confirm your programme accepts March intake.

D-2 Student Visa

Pakistani citizens must apply in person at the Korean Embassy in Islamabad (Mon–Fri, 9:30–11:30 AM) or the Consulate in Karachi (Mon–Fri, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM). No appointment needed.

Required documents

  • Valid passport (6+ months validity) + all previous passports photocopied
  • Completed visa application form + 1 passport photo (3.5 × 4.5 cm)
  • Standard Admission Letter (CoA) from your Korean university
  • Attested academic documents — Matric/FSc: IBCC → MOFA; Bachelor's: HEC → MOFA
  • Bank statement showing ₩20M (~PKR 40 Lac) over last 6 months
  • TB Test Certificate — mandatory for Pakistani applicants (programmes over 91 days)
  • Police character certificate (last 5 years), attested by MOFA
  • IELTS certificate or MOI letter (verify with university first)
  • Travel health insurance
Start attestation as soon as you decide to apply

Many students delay attestation until after admission — this is a mistake. The attestation chain (IBCC → HEC → MOFA) takes 4–8 weeks and is required for both university applications AND the visa. Start the process in February for the September intake, or in August for the March intake. Do not wait for your admission letter.

Visa fee and processing

  • Fee: $60–$90 USD (non-refundable)
  • Processing: 2–4 weeks
  • Apply at least 6 weeks before departure

Total Budget to Leave Pakistan

South Korea does not use a blocked account. You only need to show a bank statement — your money stays accessible.

Expense Amount Notes
1st Semester Tuition Rs. 4 Lac – 27 Lac Must be paid before CoA issuance
D-2 Visa Fee $60–$90 (~PKR 17K–25K) Paid at Korean Embassy, non-refundable
Bank Statement (proof only) ₩20M (~PKR 40 Lac) NOT frozen — proof of funds only
Health Insurance $50–$100 (~PKR 14K–28K) Required for visa application
Flight (one-way) $350–$500 (~PKR 1–1.4 Lac) Book ONLY after visa approval
Document Attestation ~PKR 15K–30K IBCC/HEC → MOFA chain
TB Test $30–$60 (~PKR 8K–17K) Mandatory for Pakistani applicants
University Application Fee ₩50K–100K (~PKR 10K–20K) Per university application
Total Minimum ~PKR 20–21 Lac+ Tuition is the largest variable

Reference: $1 USD ≈ PKR 278. Rates fluctuate — verify before budgeting.

After Arrival in Korea

1

Get your Alien Registration Card (ARC)

Apply at the local immigration office within 90 days of arrival. Fee: ~₩30,000 (~PKR 6,000). The ARC is your Korean ID — needed for bank accounts, phone, and work permits.

2

National Health Insurance (NHIS)

Automatic the month after your ARC is issued. Student premium: ₩60K–80K/month (~PKR 12K–16K). You cannot opt out.

3

Open a bank account

Visit any major bank (Kookmin, Shinhan, Woori) with your ARC, passport, and enrolment certificate.

4

Apply for work permission

After completing one semester, apply through your university's International Office. You need your ARC, transcript, and TOPIK certificate.

Work Rights

Your Korean language level directly determines how many hours you can work.

Student Level With TOPIK Without TOPIK Semester Break
Undergraduate 25 hrs/wk (TOPIK 3+) 10 hrs/wk Unlimited
Graduate 30 hrs/wk (TOPIK 4+) 15 hrs/wk Unlimited

Minimum wage: ₩10,320/hour (~PKR 2,064/hr) as of Jan 2026. At 25 hrs/week, you can earn approximately PKR 2 Lac/month gross — enough to cover most living expenses.

⚠ Do not exceed your work limit

Working beyond your permitted hours can result in visa cancellation and deportation. Your employer reports income to the tax authority, which shares data with immigration. Track every hour.

Post-Study Work — D-10 Job Seeker Visa

The D-10 visa lets you stay in Korea after graduation to search for a job.

  • Duration: 6 months initially, renewable up to 1 year. Further extension of up to 2 years possible. Total maximum: 2 years.
  • **Apply BEFORE your D-2 visa expires.*8 Missing this deadline means losing PSW eligibility entirely.
  • Once you find a job, convert to an E-7 Skilled Worker Visa. Your employer assists with the application.

PR Pathway — F-2-7 and K-STAR Fast-Track

Standard route: F-2-7 Points System

Achieve 80+ points across: Korean degree (up to 20 pts), TOPIK level (up to 20 pts), age under 30 (up to 20 pts), income (up to 20 pts), and duration of stay. Most strong applicants reach 70–75 points — you need to push one or two categories higher.

K-STAR Fast-Track (STEM graduates only)

If you complete a Master's or PhD in STEM at one of 32 designated universities (SNU, KAIST, Yonsei, Korea University, POSTECH, UNIST, GIST, DGIST):

  • Immediate F-2 visa upon graduation — no job offer needed
  • F-5 Permanent Residency after just 3 years
  • This reduces total journey to approximately 5 years (2-year Master's + 3 years on F-2)

F-5 Permanent Residency

The F-5 visa gives unrestricted long-term stay. Requirements: stable income, TOPIK Level 4+, clean criminal record, and continuous legal residence. For non-STEM students via the standard route, the realistic timeline is approximately 8–12 years from arrival.

Scholarships

  • GKS (Korean Government Scholarship): Full tuition + monthly stipend + airfare + Korean language training. The most prestigious option — apply through the Embassy track. Highly competitive.
  • University scholarships: 30–100% tuition coverage. Merit-based. Check your target university's international admissions page.
📌 Scholarship reality

Most Pakistani students in Korea are self-funded. Partial scholarships (30–50% tuition) are achievable with strong academics (70%+ or 3.0+ CGPA). Full scholarships are rare. Budget for full cost and treat any scholarship as a bonus.

Who Is South Korea For?
